Payday Someday
Text: I Corinthians 3:10-15
Dr. David L. Sampson

The Bible teaches there will be a PAY DAY SOMEDAY

  • For the Sinner—A Pay Day of Eternal Judgment
  • For the Saint—A Pay Day of Eternal Joy

Matthew 6:19-20 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:

I. God will   the Way We Lived – v.13

  • 1 Corinthians 3:13 Every man's work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is.
  • 1 Corinthians 4:5 Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord come, who both will bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and will make manifest the counsels of the hearts: and then shall every man have praise of God.
  • (3:13) Every man’s work shall be made manifest:
  • (4:5) {The Lord will} bring to light the hidden things of darkness and will make manifest the counsels of the heart

God will review and examine how you lived your life.

  • Jesus alluded to this examination in His parables:

Luke 19:15 And it came to pass, that when he was returned, having received the kingdom, then he commanded these servants to be called unto him, to whom he had given the money, that he might know how much every man had gained by trading.

  • Paul provided more details of standing before the Lord…

2 Corinthians 5:10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.

Romans 14:10-12 But why dost thou judge thy brother? or why dost thou set at nought thy brother? for we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ. For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God. So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.

You will know in an instant what kind of life you built:

  • 1 Corinthians 3:13 Every man's work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is.
  • Revelation 22:12 And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.

(3:13) “Every man’s work shall be made manifest…”

  • no exemptions,
  • no exceptions,
  • no excuses.

2 Corinthians 5:10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.

II. God Will   the Work We Laid -v.11

Mt 7:21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
Mt 7:22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?
Mt 7:23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
Mt 7:24 Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:
Mt 7:25 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.
Mt 7:26 And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand:
Mt 7:27 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.

Edward Gibbon (1737-1794) why Christianity flourished during the days of Roman rule:

  1. The zeal of the early Christians
  2. Their belief in future rewards
  3. The power of miracles
  4. The pure morals of Christians
  5. The compact church organization

Rev. 14:13  And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Write, Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them.

Don’t mistake salvation for rewards.

  • Salvation depends upon Christ's work for us.
  • Rewards depend upon our works for Christ.

III.  We Will  a Wasted Life—v. 15

  • 1 John 2:28 And now, little children, abide in him; that, when he shall appear, we may have confidence, and not be ashamed before him at his coming.

  • 2 John 8 Look to yourselves, that we lose not those things which we have wrought, but that we receive a full reward.
